Most people choose a size by looking at a list and picking the one that sounds right. That is how a beautiful 16×20 in print ends up lost on a wide living-room wall, or a 24×36 in panel overwhelms a narrow passage. A better way is to work backwards from four facts: the wall, how far away you will stand, how sharp your photo is, and what shape it is.
Start with the wall. Measure the free width of the space where the frame will hang, not the whole wall. As a rule of thumb, a single piece looks balanced when it fills about two-thirds of the furniture below it, whether that is a sofa, a bed or a console. Then think about distance. A frame you will see from across a room needs to be larger than one you will pass in a corridor.
The last two checks are technical but easy. Your photo needs enough pixels for the size, and its shape needs to match the panel. Our upload page runs an automatic image-quality check and warns you if resolution is low. For specific sizes, see 16×20 in or 24×36 in. Use the steps below and you will know your size before you open the configurator. Keep a tape measure and your phone handy, and write down the width of your wall, the viewing distance and the original file size as you go.
Measure the wall, then match the distance you will view it from
Take a tape measure and note the width of the furniture the frame will sit above. Aim for the frame to be around two-thirds of that width, and hang it so the centre is roughly at eye level, close to 57 inches from the floor. Mark the area with paper or masking tape first. Seeing the shape on the wall is more convincing than any number.
Distance sets the minimum. Standing at arm's length, as with a desk or shelf, 8×10 in to 12×16 in is comfortable. From a sofa about eight to ten feet away, 18×24 in to 24×36 in reads well. For long stairwells or double-height walls, go larger or use a set of panels. Bigger is rarely wrong on a big wall; too small always is.
Check your photo's resolution and shape before you commit
Resolution is the number of pixels in the image. A phone photo of around 12 megapixels prints sharply at 12×18 in and often looks good at 20×30 in if it is well lit. Beyond that, detail softens, especially in low-light shots or images forwarded on WhatsApp, which are compressed. Send the original file, not a screenshot, and let the quality check guide you.
Then match shape. Phone photos are usually 3:4 and many cameras shoot 2:3. If your picture is 3:4, sizes like 12×16 in and 18×24 in will hold it with little trimming. For 2:3, choose 12×18 in, 20×30 in or 24×36 in. If the ratios do not match, either accept a crop or choose a custom size built around your photo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose 3mm or 5mm acrylic?
3mm is lightweight and goes up to 20×30 inches. 5mm has a thicker feel and is the choice for larger displays, up to 48×96 inches.
How long does an acrylic frame take to arrive?
Production is typically 1–3 working days after payment and file check. After dispatch, metro locations usually take 2–5 days and other locations 4–8 days.
What photo resolution do I need?
Higher resolution gives a sharper print, especially at large sizes. The upload step checks your photo and warns you if it is too small for the size you picked.
Does the frame come ready to hang?
Stainless-steel studs are included on eligible sizes from 12×18 inches and above. Smaller sizes suit a shelf or table.
How big should a frame be above a sofa?
Aim for roughly two-thirds the width of the sofa. For a three-seater around 7 feet wide, that is a panel or group of panels spanning about 4.5 feet. A single 24×36 in or 30×40 in works, or two 20×30 in panels with a small gap between them.
What resolution do I need for a large frame?
There is no single number, because it depends on the size. A modern phone photo prints well up to about 20×30 in. Larger sizes need a sharp, uncompressed original. Our upload tool warns you if resolution is too low for the chosen size, so you can adjust before paying.
Is it better to go one size up or one size down?
On a wall, go up. A frame that is slightly too large looks bold. One that is slightly too small looks timid. On a shelf or desk the opposite applies, so choose the smaller size and leave breathing room around it.
Can I mix sizes in one gallery wall?
You can, but keep a common top line or centre line and use consistent spacing, around 2 to 3 inches. Mixed sizes with no frame border can look random. A set of same-size panels is easier to get right if you are doing it for the first time.
My photo is square. Which size should I choose?
Custom sizes start at 8×8 in, so square photos fit well without cropping. For wall use, a 16×16 in or larger square looks balanced. If you prefer a standard rectangle, plan to crop the sides and check the preview.
Does thickness affect which size I can order?
Yes. 3mm acrylic is available up to 20×30 in. For anything larger, up to 48×96 in, choose 5mm. If you are close to the limit, 5mm gives a more rigid, substantial feel that suits larger walls.
